Repurposing what you have

Sometimes a great decorating project is right at your finger tips! Look around the attic or basement or shed! Everyone complains of having too much stuff, so look at your "stuff" differently! I LOVE the mailbox in the entry way..so clever! The chairs for Fido's food ? Genius!

Come on in !

Even if you front door dumps right into your main living area (mine sure does!) try to define the area the best you can. A small table works wonders, for a place to put your keys etc. If you cannot manage a table perhaps a small shelf added to your wall. Its always nice to know where your keys are !!!

Open or Closed Storage ?

Everything needs a place. Putting your things away is key to small living. The very first thing you should consider is open or closed storage. I tend to lean towards closed, because, well, I'm a messy person. Don't get me wrong. I love the look of open storage, I just know my limitations :). My best advice is, if its pretty and you like to look at it, open storage. Otherwise, hide that stuff !!

Odd Spaces

We all have those odd ball spaces in our homes. Those spaces your not quite sure what to do with. Rethink them! Make them useful or decortive. You can put a shelf or a small chest there. Know your space and what you need !

Using Every Bit of Space

In small spaces, it's easy to think you are just plain out of room for anything else. If there is a spot in your house that does not serve much purpose, rethink it! Space above the bed, that blank wall when you first walk in the door. Rethink every spot in your home. Also don't feel like you have to have certain things in certain rooms. A home office can be in your bedroom if it works there for you. Decide how your life flows and design your home around YOU!

ahhhhhhhhh

Not really small, but the designs of these rooms are done really well. Simple, crisp, clean and to the point. The way decor should be!!

Word Number Play

I love a whimsical touch in decor. Try a lighthearted fun touch. I have lots of "words" all over my house. Just took a huge wall by my front door and turned it into a giant chalkboard. Have fun when you decorated. Your kids will love it too..

More Bright Rooms

Oh how I love bright white with color, gives off such a calm feel. The older I get, the less stuff in a room I like! These rooms are fantastic!!!

Entry

No matter how small or how narrow you can still have a entryway to your home. My front door spills right into my front room but I defined it with shelves and hooks for all those things you need on your way out. What do you do as you leave? That will help you decide how to plan it!

Entryways

<

My entryway was one of the last places I thought about. As you walk into my house, it spills right into the front room. No foyer at all. I decided I was going to design a entry. No, not adding on but giving the visitor a visual que that they were stepping into my home, not falling in. Whats great now is there are tons of things available for entryways. The above mirror shot is a part of my entry. The mirror does 2 things, makes the space appear larger and its great of that one last look before you leave. So if you only have room for a few hooks and a bench, you can still have entryway! Try to get as close to the door as you can and have a place to put your keys and hang a jacket. Its really a nice quality of life thing when it works well!
