Push and Store: Original furniture-sculpture for books

I'm fascinated with this cabinet to store books. They know I'm a fan of hardened libraries and prefer those that are more functional and allow use of space. But this furniture with a design that seems taken from a science fiction book caught my attention completely.

Halfway between shelf and puzzle, this original furniture has no shelves, doors and drawers. To save the books (or anything else) just push through wooden structures that conform to its shape as it moves backward parts needed to make room.

The designer Chung-Tang Ho had in mind to create a wardrobe and a sculpture, where the objects were participants in the creative act. Thus, the Push & Store becomes a work of art when surround your books and allows organize them original, creative and artistic.

And you, what do you think? Is not it out of a book of Harry Potter?

Make a statement !

Just because your place is small does not mean you can't make a impact with your design. People often make the mistake of not using larger pieces, thinking it will take up too much space. Not true !!

Repurposing what you have

Sometimes a great decorating project is right at your finger tips! Look around the attic or basement or shed! Everyone complains of having too much stuff, so look at your "stuff" differently! I LOVE the mailbox in the entry way..so clever! The chairs for Fido's food ? Genius!

Odd Spaces

We all have those odd ball spaces in our homes. Those spaces your not quite sure what to do with. Rethink them! Make them useful or decortive. You can put a shelf or a small chest there. Know your space and what you need !

Keeping it Together

I love when a space is not only organized but stylized too! It does not matter how good it looks if you still can't find the dog's leash! I first, figure out what I need and use and then try to make it look as good as possible. If a object is interesting (to me) then I try to leave it out. If its something I use on a daily basis, it probably sits out too. Its a highly personal thing but always remember the most important rule in small space living, less is more!

Small Space DIY projects

Here are a few DIY projects that can help with space and storage. Small bracket shelves can fit almost anywhere, and ottomans are very versatile. (All picture projects can be found at BHG, look for them under stylish DIY slide show.)

Stylish Storage

Small space is all about storage planning. The first thing I consider is do I want open or closed storage. If what I'm storing is not pretty or interesting to look at, I go with closed storage. For the most part, I opt for closed, its easier to cram stuff in when you have people coming over on short notice! I do have open storage in my office. There I find I can be a bit more creative and practical all at the same time.

Cubbies

Cubbies seem to be everywhere in pictures these days. They do make a lot of sense, I just don't know if I'm disciplined enough to have open shelving. No, I'm not. Love how they look tho. How about you? Are you cub worthy?

HGTV Rate a Room

I'm sure most of you have seen rate a room on the HGTV website. I have mixed emotions about it. On one hand, I love seeing how regular people decorate. There are some really talented people out there. Some of the comments are down right mean! I'm all for constructive criticism, but yikes! Here are a few rooms I thought were done very nicely. Do you have a favorite rate a room?

Not Your Mother's Shelving

I love how shelving is becoming art in and of itself. Placing shelves high or low, I'm seeing lots of creative idea's. Its a great way to highlight pictures and art. The above photos are great examples of how creative you can become with shelving. There are all sorts of shelving for sale in many stores now...the possibilities are endless!
